BS27-1: Day or Night, Locked and Loaded
KADENA AIR BASE, Japan - U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron recently issued simulated weapons to Airmen as part of Exercise Beverly Sword 27-1 at Kadena Air Base, Japan, Oct. 27, 2026.
During the exercise, 18th LRS Airmen played a crucial role in defending the base by issuing individual protective equipment, bedrolls and simulated weapons. The weapons issue prepares Airmen to respond to simulated threats and operate in a contingency environment.
Forethought, practice, and proper planning help prepare Airmen by improving their readiness and preparedness to meet operational demands. For Airmen whose primary duties are outside traditional combat roles, exercises like BS27-1 provide an opportunity to prepare for responsibilities beyond their day-to-day work.
“These exercises give Airmen a good opportunity to become familiar with handling weapons, protective equipment and following established procedures before deploying,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Justen Rodriguez, 18th LRS, fuels contract officer representative. “Training in a controlled environment helps Airmen build confidence, reduce anxiety and become better prepared to operate in demanding conditions.”
Building familiarity in a simulated environment helps Airmen familiarize themselves with the processes and helps shape them into multi-capable Airmen.
“Selective arming makes sure every Airman is trained and ready for the fight,” said Senior Airman Major Mclemore, 18th Comptroller Squadron financial budget analysis technician.
Exercises like BS 27-1 test the 18th Wing’s ability to rapidly adapt and support the greater mission in projecting airpower, deterring aggression, and strengthening regional stability.
