BS27-1: Ready to defend

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan – U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron issued weapons to personnel participating in Exercise Beverly Sword 27-1 at Kadena Air Base, Japan, Oct. 26, 2026. The weapons issue prepares Airmen to respond to simulated threats and operate in a contingency environment.

The 18th LRS supports exercise readiness by issuing the equipment Airmen need to train for potential threats. “Given the adversarial pressures in this region, we must be prepared to defend ourselves and our allies,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Arjehnel Terrado, 18th LRS individual protective equipment supervisor. “This equipment helps protect us, but we also need to know how to use it effectively. Without the proper equipment and training, our ability to accomplish the mission is reduced.”

For Airmen whose primary duties are outside traditional combat roles, exercises like BS27-1 provide an opportunity to prepare for responsibilities beyond their day-to-day work.

“Taking this responsibility seriously strengthens our readiness and mission effectiveness,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Victoria Lockhart, 18th Wing commander's executive assistant. “As administrative and human resources Airmen, we may not get these opportunities often, but when called upon, we must be prepared to step up and accomplish the mission.”

Exercises such as BS27-1 allow Kadena to assess its readiness, strengthen coordination, and prepare Airmen across the installation to respond to a range of operational challenges. Through this training, the 18th LRS helps ensure Airmen are equipped to support the mission when called upon.
