BS27-1: 18th SFS neutralizes the threat

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- When shots are fired, 18th Security Forces Squadron rushes toward the source. U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 18th SFS responded to a simulated ground attack during Exercise Beverly Sword 27-1 at Kadena Air Base, Japan, Oct. 26, 2026, neutralizing two simulated attackers and testing their ability to respond to evolving threats.

The scenario began with an explosion followed by small-arms fire. Security Forces members moved to the scene, using available cover as they approached and coordinating their movements to locate casualties and neutralize the initial threat.

“When the explosion occurred outside building 705, we immediately heard small-arms fire and moved out to assess the threat,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Daniel Montgomery, 18th SFS operations section chief. “Our Airmen responded immediately, located the threat and took action to neutralize it.”

After completing the initial casualty search, Airmen encountered a second round of small-arms fire, requiring them to shift their positions and respond to the additional threat. Montgomery explained that when a secondary threat emerges in the same area, defenders use verbal commands to communicate and reposition forces.

“Teamwork was very important throughout the response,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Anastacia Ventura, 18th SFS response force leader. “Communication and trusting the person in front of you were essential because we had to work together, maintain our positions, and rely on each other as we moved toward the threat.”

The exercise tested several essential Security Force's skills, including weapons proficiency, dismounted operations, movement toward a threat and systematically sweeping an area. Clear communication and coordinated movement helped the defenders respond as the scenario changed.

Exercise BS27-1 evaluates the 18th SFS’s ability to respond to simulated ground attacks and protect personnel and installation resources. This training strengthens Kadena’s readiness to defend the installation and support security and stability across the Pacific.
